Claiming to be "good for the planet" no longer wins anyone over. More brands are redesigning the whole system of making - from material sourcing to repair services. We picked practices from our listed brands that look set to become the new standard.
Now that "sustainable" is an everyday word, the question is how serious you really are. The review for brands listed on WTB includes items confirming material traceability and the thinking behind production lots.
Designing not to overproduce
FOLKLORE holds firmly to small-lot production from 30 pieces, carrying sold-out items over to the next season. "Not holding inventory turned out to be the most sustainable thing of all," one co-founder says.
A system for wearing longer
The brand also offers repairs regardless of purchase year. Treating five or ten years of mending frays and tears as part of the design is a stance that should become the standard.
Materials, production, aftercare - only when the three connect does sustainability turn from a signboard into real brand strength. Next season, try reading the back of the tag before you choose.
